Helfer was raised in the rural area of Donalda, Alberta, Canada in Canada, the children of Dennis Helfer and Elaine Helfer. Her parents are born to German and English descendance. She studied at the William E. Hay Composite High School in Stettler situated in Alberta. Three sisters she shared with lived on their family's grain farm. An agent scout spotted Helfer aged 17 while she was standing in line for a movie.
